“You don’t have to be crazy to be a goalie, but it helps.” - Bernie Parent
“Goalies are… different, a little odd.” - Hockey fans everywhere.
Do these quotes sound familiar to you? We’ve all heard them! As a goalie parent, we have probably even said it ourselves, “you’re either hero or zero," or “I can’t keep calm. I’m a goalie parent.”
No other position on a hockey team gets as much attention as the goalie when it comes to the gags. But practice, well that’s another story.
As a parent, you know your goalie. And I bet they're not odd, they're perfectly normal. Are they weird because they don’t enjoy head shots at 6am, followed by a celly?! I think not! They want shots to the blocker side, top left corner, to practice rebounds and take shots from the point.
Goalies want, need and crave instruction.
During the regular season proper goalie instruction with someone that is experienced with current techniques is not accessible to all. Goalies have specific needs and skills to incorporate into their development, such as stretching, yoga, rolling their muscles to reduce the chance of injury and increase flexibility. More on this in a future post!
Okanagan Hockey has always provided young ice hockey goaltenders a variety of options for their summer training and development needs. But this year, we have taken it up a notch, and we are excited! There is even more goalie specific instruction offered through our summer camp programs in all locations. We looked at feedback from previous camp surveys and made a conscious effort to revamp our programming for 2019. You can expect your goalie to receive more of what they need and what you as parents have asked for. We have something for every goalie, from those just starting their career as tenders to elite level goalies that want to play at the highest level.
Check out our development options for your goalie and please, if you have questions about any of the information you see here, we would love to talk to you personally about the right option for your goalie.
This camp is a great option for young goalies building the core fundamentals of the position in a fun camp environment.
Maybe your goalie has taken another of our goalie specific camps and wants to spend time putting his new skills into practice. This is a great camp experience and opportunity to get back on the ice and face some shots as well as take part in all other activities. Maybe your goalie is just starting out. They still play out, but love goaltending and want to do both for now. This is a low cost option to give them some great exposure in the net and keep up with both positions!
Are you looking for a great week of goalie specific training and instruction and have solid fundamental goalie skills? This newly offered camp is available each week at all of our locations.
This is an intense program as the name suggests. This is for goalies that are willing to work hard and be rewarded with some great progress in their development.
This is our top goalie camp, so come prepared to listen, work hard and hone your skills. This application only goalie camp sells out every year.
“If you want to play, then practice. If you want to win, practice harder”
We are really excited for the upcoming summer hockey camp season to begin and we hope you are too. If you would like to learn more about Okanagan Hockey’s goalie specific development camps, please give us a call or send us an email and we would be happy to share more on our goaltending philosophies and find the right program for your son or daughter.

In 2010 I was fortunate enough to play at the Okanagan Hockey Academy on the Midget Prep team. With coaches like Robert Dirk and Greg Holst it was an unbelievable year. I have to this day still never been on such a close-knit team. It was my first year of midget hockey and that meant a lot more travel. Playing in the CSSHL I got the opportunity to play in some pretty awesome spots. The league helped me learn to stay on top of school, which has helped me not only in college but also in junior. I was able to make an easy jump to junior and college academically with the help of Dave Nackoney, a guidance counselor at Penticton Secondary School who works with all the student athletes. To this day if I need anything he is always more than willing to help. It is the great staff that left such an impression on me, and made it possible for me to be where I am today.
