OHO Whitby adds U15 Prep team for 2022-2023 season

Mar 28, 2022

WHITBY, ONTARIO (March 28, 2022) – Okanagan Hockey Ontario (OHO) is pleased to announce that it will be adding a second team, which will begin operating in Whitby, Ontario, in 2022-2023. They will play at the U15 Prep level and feature male athletes born in 2008 and entering grade 9.

The team is sanctioned under the Ontario Hockey Federation (OHF) and the Ontario Minor Hockey Association (OMHA). It will operate for 10-months of the year, following the school calendar, and feature an independent, event-based competition schedule.

“To provide students with our structure, support, knowledge and experience as they enter high school will allow them to maximize their potential as student athletes. We are extremely excited for this opportunity to mentor students as they transition to high school and support them through these important years of growth, maturity and development.” said General Manager Paul Pascuzzi.

The schedule will follow the very successful OHO model, with a focused daily schedule that emphasises integrated athletic and academic development. Professional coaches and strength and conditioning staff will guide student-athletes on and off the ice, while a dedicated academic counsellor will ensure that student-athletes thrive equally in the classroom as they do at the rink.

OHO athletes train out of the beautiful Iroquois Park Sports Centre (IPSC). Inside, there are six arenas, including a large stadium arena, two pools, a fully licensed restaurant and food court area, banquet and meeting rooms, a pro shop and elite athletic training facilities. Outside, there are six illuminated tennis courts, three illuminated tournament quality baseball diamonds, another two unlit ball diamonds and a fully lit tournament quality soccer pitch. The 250,000 square foot sports and entertainment facility was voted in the Top 5 "Best Arenas in the GTA" by Toronto Star.

The strength and conditioning component of the program is in partnership with Elite Training Systems, which is located in the IPSC. Students attend school just down the road at Henry Street High School, which has a proud tradition of academic excellence, and of providing many and varied opportunities for students to get involved in school life.

“Our program focuses on building good athletes and good citizens by focusing on education and community stewardship, while also experiencing elite hockey competition and exposure to the next level,” said Okanagan Hockey Group President Andy Oakes.

Okanagan Hockey Ontario operates within the Okanagan Hockey Group, who operates 5 academies world-wide, providing both world-class training and education to student-athletes. Recognizing the need for 10-months of training and long-term development of student-athletes, OHG launched the first Okanagan Hockey Academy in 2002 in Penticton. Soon after, OHG launched similar programs: in St. Polten, Austria in 2008; Edmonton, Alberta in 2015; and, Whitby Ontario in 2018. OHG’s success can be seen in the long list of players who have moved on to play in the NHL, multiple Pro Leagues, WHL, Junior A, and University and International levels.

Coaching staff will be announced shortly.

On Saturday April 9th, 2022, please join us at Iroquois Park Sports Centre for a very special OHO open house. GM Paul Pascuzzi will lead participants through a presentation, beginning at 10:30am, and afterwards the kids will be able to hit the ice at 12:15pm with Okanagan Hockey Group Skill Development Coach Mike Duco.

Looking for a program you can trust?

We have over 50 years of experience.

Choosing Okanagan Hockey Academy was one of the best decisions I have made for my development. The relationships I built with my teammates, coaches, and staff are bonds that will last a lifetime. The structure of the program on and off the ice prepared me to play junior hockey.
