The Okanagan Hockey Academy (OHA) is pleased to congratulate OHA Europe player Marco Richter on being drafted in the second round, 26th overall, by the Madison Capitols in the 2014 United States Hockey League (USHL) Entry Draft.
Richter led the OHA Europe Prep team, the Lower Austria Stars U20 squad, in scoring this past season with 67 points (39-28-67) in 46 games.
In March, the Vienna, Austria product received a Division I scholarship to the University of Connecticut (NCAA) beginning in the 2015-16 season. UConn will be joining the Hockey East conference beginning next fall.
Richter was the third European-born player selected in the USHL Entry Draft, which was conducted on Monday. The Capitols are an expansion team based out of Madison, Wisconsin that will begin play during the 2014-15 USHL season. The team is part-owned by NHL star and Minnesota Wild defenceman, Ryan Suter.
Comprised of 16 teams, the USHL is the top-level of junior hockey in the United States that sees many players move onto the NCAA ranks.

In 2010 I was fortunate enough to play at the Okanagan Hockey Academy on the Midget Prep team. With coaches like Robert Dirk and Greg Holst it was an unbelievable year. I have to this day still never been on such a close-knit team. It was my first year of midget hockey and that meant a lot more travel. Playing in the CSSHL I got the opportunity to play in some pretty awesome spots. The league helped me learn to stay on top of school, which has helped me not only in college but also in junior. I was able to make an easy jump to junior and college academically with the help of Dave Nackoney, a guidance counselor at Penticton Secondary School who works with all the student athletes. To this day if I need anything he is always more than willing to help. It is the great staff that left such an impression on me, and made it possible for me to be where I am today.
