The Okanagan Hockey Academy is seeking a full time Certified Athletic Therapist with a strong knowledge of strength and conditioning to manage our team of athletic therapists and strength coaches.  The successful candidate will become part of a world class hockey development program that believes in a commitment to excellence in all areas of the athlete’s on and off ice training.

The Okanagan Hockey Academy is a division of Okanagan Hockey Group Ltd which is the longest and oldest running hockey school in the world. We have provided professional hockey instruction since 1963 and are located in Penticton, British Columbia. We have a state of the art facility to provide a unique development opportunity for each of our student athletes. The Okanagan Hockey Academy is a prep school environment which consists of 8 teams that include both male and female programs. Scope of Work:

Under general supervision from the Vice President of Hockey Operations,  the Manager of Athletic Therapy and Medical Services will be responsible for supervising all athletic therapy and strength and conditioning staff to provide comprehensive programming and treatment to promote the health and well-being of all athletes.  The Manager of Athletic Therapy and Medical Services will oversee all training and ensure an emphasis is placed upon prevention, treatment and proper rehabilitation of injuries.  The Manager of Athletic Therapy and Medical Services will act as the liaison between the team physician, parents, Manager of Residential Life, Manager of Academics and OHG Staff.

Description of Primary Responsibilities:       

Administration Duties:

  • Hire, supervise and manage athletic therapy and strength and conditioning staff
  • Assist with development, administering and meeting department budgets
  • In conjunction with the Management Committee, design and implement training programs
  • Scheduling of staff for daily coverage in all on and off ice activities.  Scheduling of all off ice activities including workouts, yoga, team physician appointments, skate sharpening and laundry
  • Liaise with team physician, parents, and OHG staff regarding athletes’ medical status and injury management plan
  • Maintain comprehensive training, injury and medical records for all athletes
  • Develop and/or revise and implement all emergency care procedures; and instruct all staff in roles and execution
  • Hire/manage contracts with facility cleaners and service people
  • Hire/manage contracts with Athletic Therapy contractors and other non-employee consultants

OHA/OHC Duties:

  • Conduct pre-season medical form screening for all OHA athletes
  • Oversee and assist with equipment management including inventory, ordering and distribution
  • Ensure proper selection and fitting of athlete equipment
  • Coordinate and supervise rehabilitation programs
  • Oversee, design and assist with fitness programs in conjunction with other OHG staff
  • Responsible for all Athletic Therapist and Strength and Conditioning duties as outlined in these positions including but not limited to warmups, cooldowns, taping, game coverage, laundry, etc.
  • Ensure staff are following procedures regarding skate sharpening, laundry and other duties pre and post-game
  • Travel with assigned teams
  • Transportation of athletes in company vehicles when required
  • Other duties as assigned

 Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Confident in a managerial role and ability to train and supervise staff
  • Ability to implement effective injury prevention and risk management programs
  • Ability to lead and guide adolescent athletes and create an environment that encourages athletes to reach their potential
  • Knowledgeable in injury assessment, basic life support, recognition of management of acute traumatic neurological dysfunction and first aid
  • Knowledgeable of techniques facilitating a safe return to participation
  • Knowledgeable in warm-ups, cooldowns, conditioning programs, prophylactic and supportive taping, and able to adapt easily to the environment and facilities
  • Able to keep up to date treatment records and maintain confidentiality
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing to staff, athletes, parents, and other personnel
  • Strong administrative, organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office, Excel and other computer programs
  • Must maintain all qualifications, certifications and continued professional development
  • Ability to follow the philosophies, policies and procedures of Okanagan Hockey Group

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor Degree in Athletic Therapy, Kinesiology, Physical Education, Sport Science or equivalent with 3-5 years of experience
  • CAT(C) designation mandatory
  • Clinic and Fitness facility management experience
  • Valid First Responder Certification
  • CSCS, CPT or equivalent certification required  
  • Class 4 driver’s licence and a current driver’s abstract required at time of employment
  • Criminal record check and vulnerable persons check
  • Hockey Canada Safety Person, Respect in Sport, Concussion Awareness Training Tool online courses
  • Hockey experience and/or team training experience is preferred
  • Experience with skate sharpening is an asset
